Soon, Seattleites and tourists alike will have access to gorgeous views of the Puget Sound, as well as access to new restaurants, shops, and an extended vendor area. There will also be low-income housing and additional Market parking. The History of Pike Place


The Market is one of the oldest of its kind in the U.S., having opened its doors in 1907. The reason for the Market was twofold: Local farmers were fed up with having to sell produce through wholesalers on a consignment basis, and consumers were furious at the rising prices of produce.

And so, Councilman Thomas Revelle proposed a public market were farmers and consumers could establish a direct relationship. Thus began the life of Market we know and love today. But, there was still something missing…until now.

The MarketFront Vision

The new MarketFront will be the final piece of the Market Historic District. (We’re thrilled because it’s going to make living in our Seattle waterfront apartments even better!) Believe it or not, this has been in the making for four decades so it’s a huge deal! The Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority’s final vision includes the following: 

  • Over 10,000 square feet of new commercial space and 300 new parking stalls
  • A brand new, beautiful, weather-protected pavilion with vendor stalls
  • The addition of 40 low-income housing units for seniors
  • The creation of a 30,000 square-foot public plaza with unobstructed views of the Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains
  • Direct and easy access to the revitalized Waterfront

Grand Opening of the MarketFront 

The biggest party of the year is happening right down the street from Cyrene’s Seattle waterfront apartments, and you can take part! The MarketFront’s Grand Opening will be from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on June 29. People from Seattle and beyond will be descending upon Pike Place Market to enjoy music, food, and interactive tours provided by MarketFront Passport. Here is a detailed schedule of the festivities:

2 p.m. – The Grand Opening Ceremony will begin

3 p.m. – The Pazific will be filling the MarketFront with the sound of world music

4:45The Dip will get your feet tapping with a mixture of pop, soul, and R&B

6:30Grace Love will be rounding off the festivities with soul music and a gorgeous voice

All day – Market vendors will be serving up bites and drinks
