If you’ve spent any time in Seattle, you’ve most likely visited or at least heard about Pioneer Square. Believed to be the Emerald City’s very first neighborhood, it represents a truly Seattle way of life. As an epicenter of diversity, the area has it all —  art, culture, entertainment, nightlife, and a rich and fascinating history. Since Cyrene’s apartments near Pioneer Square were built, we’ve spent a lot of time in this end of town. Here are our recommendations for places you must absolutely check out!

The Underground Tour is a super fun way to learn about some Seattle history. Since it’s less than a half mile from Cyrene’s luxury apartments in Seattle, it’s a hotspot for residents and their visitors. Following the Great Seattle Fire that destroyed 30 blocks of old-timey Seattle, city officials ordered that sturdier structures be rebuilt two stories above the original streets. This resulted in abandoned shops and newly-created underground tunnels. For 75 minutes, a hilarious tour guide will lead you through this intriguing subterranean “city”.

One great aspect of Pioneer Square is that it’s a neighborhood that embraces modernity while cherishing the past. The Central Saloon is a good example of this. Dating back to 1892, it’s the oldest saloon in Seattle. While it’s no longer a hangout for gold miners (sorry if you happen to be one), it’s a terrific spot for catching a game or checking out some of the hottest musicians and shows.

Drop by Smith Tower

Smith Tower, which is about a 10-minute walk from our downtown Seattle apartments, is another example of a preserved piece of Pioneer Square history. In 1914, it held the title as the tallest skyscraper in Seattle. Today, its iconic halls tell interesting tales of the past (think bootlegging operations during Prohibition). You’ll feel like you’re back in the 1920s as you enter the historic elevators and make your way to the observation deck (or cocktail bar) at the top of the Tower. Here, you’ll get stunning 360-degree views of Seattle.

Spend Some Time at Waterfall Garden Park

Pocket parks are all the rage these days and Waterfall Garden Park is one of the best. If you’re unfamiliar with what a pocket park is, it’s typically a small section of urban land that’s transformed into a public area with greenery, places to sit, and sometimes room for recreation. Waterfall Garden is an impressive space with seating, gorgeous landscaping, and the pièce de résistance — a 22-foot waterfall.
