If you’re new to Seattle, you’re probably just learning about how much we love our salmon. If you’re a long-time Seattleite, HEADS UP: OUR BELOVED SALMON ARE COMING HOME! Being the festive city that we are, we celebrate the incredible and important salmon homecoming every year. The 25th annual homecoming is just a week away, and we at Cyrene are ecstatic that it’s all happening just a stone’s throw away from our Seattle Waterfront Apartments! So, in honor of our determined little fish friends, we’re digging into one of the Emerald City’s most treasured events.

What Is the Salmon Homecoming?

Simply put – it’s all about creating and maintaining life. Every year, salmon migrate from the ocean to spawn. These salmon actually begin their lives in the Seattle area but take to the sea to mature. September brings them back to where they were born to begin a brand-new life cycle. The salmon homecoming results in the deaths of almost all the returning adult fish, but what is left behind are the essential nutrients that immensely support other forms of wildlife.

Why Does It Matter?

The salmon are critical to our environment. Unfortunately, pollution and other factors can have a negative impact on their survival, which threatens critical ecosystems. Moreover, many Native American tribes have strong, long-standing traditions centered on being stewards of the salmon. This is what the homecoming celebration is all about: to educate citizens on both the marine protection of salmon and Native American cultures.

What Happens During the Salmon Homecoming?

From September 14 to 17, The Salmon Homecoming Alliance will be hosting a celebration at Seattle’s Waterfront Park. The experience includes traditional Native American gatherings, canoe events, pow wows, and vendors.

Also, the Homecoming includes the School Days on the Waterfront event. Throughout the celebration, hundreds of elementary school students descend upon the Seattle Waterfront to participate in educational activities. Located south of the Seattle Aquarium, School Days is completely free and includes cool exhibitors and interactive booths.
