Cyrene was originally a steamboat built in the boatyard at the site of the Coleman Dock in Seattle. The vessel was commissioned as a yacht by James M. Coleman, a prominent businessman in the early days of the Emerald City. Colman hoped that the building of the yacht would encourage employment in the shipyard. From 1891 to 1912, Cyrene operated in the Puget Sound and on Lake Washington. Cyrene, originally a steamboat, is a fitting name for our building, which is actually located right next to the Seattle Steam plant. As a name, Cyrene evokes the history of Seattle’s waterfront while speaking to sort of.
